When you hire a photographer to capture your special moments, such as your wedding, newborn, family or graduating senior, do you know if they save the images in the event of a disaster? Your images are keepsakes. They are more than just memories and sometimes, they serve just that point and are a way to reflect when someone in the photo is no longer here.
When I advanced my business and became professional, I thought many times about what I could do to preserve the memories I have captured for many clients that have came into my studio or whom I have had the opportunity to capture their special day or event. Sometimes, these sessions or events lead to capturing hundreds of images, each unique in their own way. What if someone lost their images due to a fire, a flood, or any other natural disaster? The decision was easy. I decided to save every image I captured at every event., not knowing that this policy I put forth for my clients would be put to the test.
On March 16, 2019, I was hired to be the photographer for Nichole and Jeremy’s wedding in Dodge City, Kansas. I not only captured over 6 hours of the wedding event, but Nichole’s sunset bridal session and their engagement session as well, prior to the wedding. That all changed when Nichole and Jeremy lost everything they had in a devastating house fire on January 2, 2020. Of more importance, there was a photo that was brought to the wedding. This photo was of Jeremy’s brother who was in the military and passed away. This was one of the few memories Jeremy had left and it was lost in the fire. Nichole contacted me and arrangements are being made to get all of their images back to them in the next week or so.
